Inpatient Service

The volunteers at the QEII's JPs in the Community program conduct inpatient ward visits as part of our standard service offering and in emergency situations.

These visits are by appointment only, and this page will provide all the information you need to make a booking for yourself, friend, or loved one.

Appointment types

There are two types of appointments: standard and urgent.

Standard appointments

Our JPs conduct most ward visits at the conclusion of the public service, specifically:

  • Mondays: from 11am
  • Tuesdays: from 3pm
  • Thursdays: from 11am

Urgent appointments

If a patient's need is urgent, we will do our best to accomodate you. This involves an available JP performing an immediate attendance at the hospital outside of our service times (and potentially outside of standard business hours).

Meaning of urgent

Examples of urgent circumstances include:

  • A patient who is likely to lose capacity or die prior to the end of the next scheduled JP service
  • A patient who requires a document witnessed for a medical procedure prior to the end of the next scheduled JP service
  • A patient whose personal circumstances, such as accomodation, care, and other matters, will be severely hindered if a document is not executed prior to the end of the next scheduled JP service (for example, requiring an Enduring Power of Attorney prior to moving into a care facility).
Note that the urgency of a service is based on whether it needs to be performed prior to the next scheduled JP service. If it can be attended to during or at the end of our next regular service, then it is not urgent for our purposes.

Making a booking

The best way to book your appointment depends on whether or not it is urgent.

Requesting a non-urgent appointment

The best way to make a non-urgent inpatient booking is through this form. You will receive an email confirmation of your request, and someone from our team will get in touch with you as soon as possible.

Alternatively, or if you have accessibility needs which our form does not support (such as language, vision, or reading needs), call us on 07 2812 2159 . If you can't reach us, leave a message with your name and number, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Please note that phone calls from our service will be from a blocked/private number. Please ensure you can take these calls.

Requesting an urgent appointment

For an urgent request, call us on 07 2812 2159 . If you cannot reach us, leave a message with your name and number, and mention that it is an urgent inpatient request.

If we do not get back to you within one (1) hour (during normal business hours, 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday, excl. public holidays), call the QEII main line and ask to be put through to one of the emergency, out-of-hours on-call JPs.

After Hours JP Search

You are not limited to our service offerings if you need a JP quickly. The Department of Justice maintains a register of JPs and Cdecs who are willing to see clients outside of business hours. Click here to search their register.
